The town was platted in 1840, when General William Henry Harrison had just completed a successful campaign for the Presidency of the United States.  Mr. Harrison had acquired the nickname of "Old Tippecanoe" when he successfully led an army against the Indians in 1811 in a battle on the Tippecanoe Creek in Indiana.  The name Tippecanoe was adopted by the village in honor of the successful candidate.
