Harrison County was formed in 1813 by combining portions of Jefferson and Tuscarawas counties, and is located in the eastern central portion of Ohio.

                      Bowerston          

The Village of Bowerston is located in the Northwestern portion of Harrison County off State Route 151.  It was settled in the early 1800s, but was not platted until 1852 and incorporated in 1881.  The village has a population of 414 as determined in the 2000 census. and is home to a few prime businesses.

The Village of Cadiz is located in the Eastern Central portion of Harrison County at the convergence of U.S. Routes 22 and 250, and State Route 9.  Cadiz was established in 1804, selected as the county seat in 1813, and incorporated 1818.  The village has a population of 3,308 as determined in the 2000 census.

Cadiz Junction       

Cadiz Junction is located in the Eastern Central portion of Harrison County at the convergence of U.S. Routes 22 and 250, and State Route off Route 646.  Cadiz Junction was first platted as Means and later became known as Cadiz Junction.  It was located at the junction of the main line of the Pittsburgh, Cincinnati and St. Louis Railroad (Pennsylvania Railroad), with a branch line from the village of Cadiz.  Cadiz Junction was also known as Means because it was the name of the Post Office at that location.


An Historic Marker is placed at the site, where on February 14, 1861, Abraham Lincoln stopped for breakfast on his train trip to his inauguration.  General George Armstrong Custer, President Andrew Johnson, General Ulysses Grant, and Admiral Farragut were also served meals in James Cady's "well-known eating place."

Deersville    

The Village of Deersville is located in the Western Central portion of Harrison County on the Tappan Moravian Trail Scenic Byway.  Deersville was established in 1815.  The village has a population of 82 as determined in the 2000 census and is considered to be the "gateway" to Tappan Lake Park.

                             Freeport            

Freeport celebrated its bicentennial in 2010.  It is a small village located in the Southwestern portion of Harrison County at the junctions/convergences of State Routes 800, 799, and 342  It is easily accessible from U.S. Route 22.  Freeport was established in 1810 and incorporated 1882.  The village has a population of 398 as determined in the 2000 census.

Harrisville

The Village of Harrisville is located in the Southeastern portion of Harrison County on U.S. Route 250 just east of State Route 519.  This area was "visited" by Morgan's Raiders during the Civil War.  The village was established in 1834 and has a population of 259 as determined in the 2000 census.

Hopedale

The Village of Hopedale is located in the Eastern Central portion of Harrison at the junctions of U.S. Route 22/State Route 151 and State Route 646.  The village was established in 1849 as Green and incorporated as Hopedale in 1851.  The village has a population of 984 as determined in the 2000 census.

Jewett

The Village of Jewett is located in the Eastern Central portion of Harrison at the junctions of State Routes 9, 151 and 646.  The village was established in 1852 as Fairview and incorporated in 1885 as Jewett.  The village has a population of 784 as determined in the 2000 census.

Moorefield

The village of Moorefield was platted in 1815 on a high ridge which gives it a commanding view of the surrounding country.  The village reached the peak of its population prior to the Civil War era at a time when it was on a road that was being surveyed to become a national road.  It has the reputation of having sent more men to the Civil War than any other village with the same population in the state.  The building of the railroad and growth of other villages in the county relegated Moorefield to little more than a footnote.  However, the community minded citizenry have kept the village going and the area is home to the Moorefield Township buildings, a civic park, church and Volunteer Fire Department.  An historic marker is located at the village corporation limit that tells of the night when Morgan's Raiders traveled through Moorefield.

New Athens

The Village of New Athens is located in the Southeastern portion of Harrison at the junctions of State Routes 9 and 519.  The village was incorporated in 1817.  The village has a population of 342 as determined in the 2000 census.

New Rumley

New Rumley was platted in 1813 by Jacob Custer, an uncle of the General.  Prior to the building of the railroad in 1856, New Rumley was the half-way point between Steubenville and New Philadelphia, and all stage coaches in both directions stopped there for the night.  In the late 1940s, the Ohio Historical Society erected a memorial to General George A. Armstrong in the center of the town.  The Custer Memorial Foundation oversees both the memorial and a museum that is housed in the former Methodist Church.  Several events are held in the town to commemorate the historical significance of the General.

Piedmont

The village of Piedmont was established in 1880 in Moorefield Township on what had been promised to be the main line of the B&O Railroad.   With that promised unfulfilled, the town has met the fate of many of the small towns in the area.  Remnants of a more fruitful time still remain.  Piedmont dam and marina are located in the area.

Scio

The Village of Scio is located in the North Central portion of Harrison at the junctions of State Routes 151 and 646.  The village was established as New Market 1837 and incorporated in 1867 as Scio which means "to know.".  The village has a population of 799 as determined in the 2000 census.

Tippecanoe

The town was platted in 1840, when General William Henry Harrison had just completed a successful campaign for the Presidency of the United States.  Mr. Harrison had acquired the nickname of "Old Tippecanoe" when he successfully led an army against the Indians in 1811 in a battle on the Tippecanoe Creek in Indiana.  The name Tippecanoe was adopted by the village in honor of the successful candidate.
